My name is Margot Rijven. I work as a visual artist in Rotterdam. My artwork is an expression of my fascination for the beauty of growth and the inevitability of decay.
I am intrigued by the idea that since the beginning of time, humans have always been looking for ways to bring order to both their internal and external worlds. Imagery, music and dance have since ancient times and across all cultures worldwide, been the primary forms of expression used to create order and make this order visible. They create connection between people and make that which is incomprehensible more tolerable. The impressions I gathered from my travels, my work as an art therapist and my academic background have helped me to express this concept.
My paintings are an ode to the forms, rhythms and patterns that arise from the capricious and unfathomable influences of nature. I am inspired by everything that is subject to these rhythms: ancient landscapes, flora, fauna and people. Humans are portrayed as beings that try to influence and direct these natural processes.
The collage technique plays a symbolic role in my work. I use natural and synthetic materials such as sand, glass and plastic waste which are then stuck over each other in layers, so that they form a relief on the canvas. During this work process, I tear the collage material off again so that new structures arise. These relief forms are then connected through transparant layers of paint to create the final image.
The balance of nature maintained by the interaction of creative and destructive forces is the underlying source of inspiration. This battle scene of construction and deconstruction returns during the creation of my visual work. In the images that arise, I blend patterns and colour combinations that have their origins in Asian and African traditional art. I try to unite the ancient with the contemporary, the unconscious with the conscious. This process is a voyage of discovery that I want to make visible in the paintings for myself and others.
Mijn naam is Margot Rijven, werkzaam als kunstenares in Rotterdam. Mijn beeldend werk is een uiting van mijn fascinatie voor de schoonheid van bloei en de onvermijdelijkheid van verval.
Ik ben geïntegreerd door de gedachte dat de mens sinds het begin der tijden altijd op zoek is naar manieren om ordening aan te brengen in zijn binnen- en buitenwereld. Beeld, muziek en dans zijn sinds oudsher primaire uitingsvormen om deze ordening te scheppen en zichtbaar te maken, in alle culturen wereldwijd. Ze creëren verbintenis tussen mensen en maken het onbegrijpelijke draagbaar. De indrukken die ik op mijn reizen heb opgedaan, mijn werk als beeldend therapeut en academische achtergrond helpen mij om dit concept te verbeelden.
Mijn schilderijen zijn een ode aan de vormen, ritmes en patronen die ontstaan door de grillige en ondoorgrondelijke invloeden van de natuur. Hierbij laat ik me inspireren door alles wat onderhevig is aan deze ritmes: oeroude natuurlandschappen, flora, fauna en mensen. De mens verbeeld ik als degene die deze werking van de natuur probeert te beïnvloeden en te sturen.
De collagetechniek speelt in mijn werk een symbolische rol. Ik maak gebruik van natuurlijke en kunstmatige materialen zoals zand, glas en plastic wegwerpmateriaal. Deze plak ik in lagen over elkaar, totdat zij een reliëf vormen op het canvas. Tijdens het maakproces scheur ik het opgeplakte collagemateriaal weer van het canvas af, waardoor er weer nieuwe structuren ontstaan. Deze reliëfvormingen verbind ik middels transparante lagen verf tot het uiteindelijke beeld.
Inpspiratiebron voor deze werkwijze is het gegeven dat het evenwicht in de natuur wordt gehandhaafd door een samenspel van vormende en destructieve krachten. Dit strijdtoneel van opbouw en afbraak herhaal ik in het maken van mijn schilderijen. In de beelden die hieruit voortkomen verwerk ik patronen en kleurcombinaties die hun oorsprong hebben in de Aziatische en Afrikaanse traditionele kunst. Het oeroude probeer ik hierbij te verenigen met het hedendaagse, het onbewuste met het bewuste. Dit proces is voor mij een ontdekkingsreis, welke ik in het schilderij zichtbaar wil maken voor mezelf en voor anderen.
